BC Static
2008.11.12

A couple of weeks ago, I was in Vancouver visiting GroundWaves' original benefactor Paul Hoffman who was working out there for several weeks. We decided to take in some of the local scene at the Bourbon in Gastown, and Sound and Silence (pictured left, click to enlarge) was one of the acts we caught. The brainchild of singer/guitarist Brian Holt, they put on a great live show. Their CD Our Static Lives is equally good but kind of inconsistent in sound; it fluctuates between post-punk and anti-folk. Some songs are worthy of The Church or of Echo and the Bunnymen, whereas others are reminiscent of The Moldy Peaches or the Velvet Underground with hints of CCR. Overall, though, there's not a bad track on the record. Standouts include "Down" (with which they opened the show at the Bourbon), "The Wind Whispers Slow" and "If I Were a Pirate."
