New Music From Old Friends
2008.09.03

New music today from three artists already in the GroundWaves rotation. The David Bach Consort treats us to several live tunes that show the dynamism of their stage show, with stirring versions of a few songs already in the playlist. The real gem here, though, is thier jazz interpretation of the classic Beatles tune, "Come Together"--be sure to listen for it in the broadcast.

Violence Marred By Peace, the latest CD from guitar virtuoso Rick Ray, continues to deliver the blazing solos that are the signature of the band. On this record, though, Ray gives his band a little more space in the mix, with the bass and drums coming further into the foreground of the wall of sound. He's brought in a new singer on this record as well, who unfortunately fails to get the job done in most cases. There are a few songs where he eases it back, and it definitely sounds better when he's not trying as hard to sound like a badass. Overall, it's a good record; listen in particular for the title track, "Violence Marred By Peace."

San Francisco's Andrew Goldfarb has turned his band, The Slow Poisoners into a one-man show and returns to the GroundWaves broadcast as The Slow Poisoner (singular). The new album, Roadside Altar, starts off slow but starts to find its footing around the third or fourth track. The standout here is "Bad Bungalow," which will get you moving with its Bo Diddley beat. Goldfarb's got a solid collection of tracks here, and certainly proves to us that the loss of the rest of the band hasn't poisoned his sound.
